Research Interests

I am interested in how inflammatory mechanisms of immunity contribute to health and the prevention of disease. My multi-disciplinary program includes both fundamental and applied research in topics affecting human and veterinary medicine. I hold appointments in the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Nutritional Sciences, and the Department of Biological Sciences.

Broadly, we research questions in the areas of innate immunity, host-pathogen interactions, and zoonosis. Currently, we are focusing our efforts on four specific areas: 1) immunity, inflammation and the prevention of zoonosis (Toxoplasma, prion diseases, mastitis), 2) evolution of phagocytosis killing programs, 3) tissue macrophages as potent effectors of antimicrobial responses during prenatal development, and 4) use of immune parameters to assess value for nutritional ingredients.

Research hosts include fish, amphibian, and rodent animal models, as well as larger animal species that are critical to the Alberta economy. We utilize high-end techniques in flow cytometry, microscopy, cellular and molecular immunology, and protein biochemistry.
